Course overview
The Medical Ultrasound pathway of the Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences course is for professionals who wish to develop competency in the field of ultrasound. Clinical modules are offered in the areas of obstetrics, gynaecology, abdominal and General ultrasound.
The course is designed to enhance your current knowledge and understanding and give you opportunities to challenge and critically evaluate your professional practice.

Professional Accreditation:
The MSc Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences course is accredited by the College of Radiographers. The Medical Ultrasound pathway is accredited by the Consortium for Accreditation of Sonographic Education (CASE).
Who is it for?
This course is for qualified radiographers, midwives, nurses and other health care professionals who are involved in the performance and reporting of ultrasound examinations. Candidates require employment in, or access to an appropriate NHS clinical site whilst enrolled on the programme. Students are responsible for securing an appropriate clinical placement.
Course Structure:
The course is flexible and modular allowing you to create a programme of study to meet your personal development and career aspirations. To attain a Master’s award, you need to complete 180 credits. There are also Post graduate Diploma and Postgraduate Certificate awards available.
The rate and pace of study are up to you. You have up to 6 years to complete your master’s course.
The Master’s degree consists of three elements: core (to include 2 compulsory modules and clinical modules); research modules and optional modules (optional modules may comprise additional core modules or interprofessional modules). Please contact the Course Leader to discuss in more depth.
To obtain a Medical Ultrasound award a minimum of 60 credits are required and must include:
- Ultrasound Image Production and Optimisation
- Professional responsibilities in Ultrasound Reporting
- 30 credits from a core clinical module.
Award titles:
Depending on your plan of study you can obtain different award titles:
MSc Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences: Medical Ultrasound
180 credits to include:
- Ultrasound Image Production and Optimisation
- Professional responsibilities in Ultrasound Reporting
- At least 60 credits from the core clinical modules
- 60 Credits from our Research modules
Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Ultrasound
120 credits to include:
- Ultrasound Image Production and Optimisation
- Professional responsibilities in Ultrasound Reporting
- At least 60 credits from the core clinical modules
Postgraduate Certificate in Abdominal and General Ultrasound
60 credits to include:
- Ultrasound Image Production and Optimisation
- Professional responsibilities in Ultrasound Reporting
- Abdominal and General Ultrasound
Postgraduate Certificate in Obstetric Ultrasound
60 credits to include:
- Ultrasound Image Production and Optimisation
- Professional responsibilities in Ultrasound Reporting
- Obstetric Ultrasound
Postgraduate Certificate in in Gynaecological Ultrasound
60 credits to include:
- Ultrasound Image Production and Optimisation
- Professional responsibilities in Ultrasound Reporting
- Gynaecological ultrasound
Research modules:
The Research modules are compulsory for completion of the MSc award.
The three research modules must be studied in this order:
- Research Methods in Health & Social Care (7HSK2211)
- Preparation for Research Project in Health & Social Care (7HSK2210)
- Research Project in Health & Social Care (7HSK2209)
Preparation for Research Project in Health & Social Care (7HSK2210) can only be studied upon successful completion of Research Methods in Health & Social Care (7HSK2211). Research Project in Health & Social Care (7HSK2209) can only be studied on successful completion of Research Methods in Health & Social Care (7HSK2211) and Preparation for Research Project in Health & Social Care (7HSK2210). Research Methods (7HSK2211) can be taken in any year but needs to be passed prior to the year 7HSK2210 & 7HSK2209 are undertaken, which are typically taken in the final year.
Optional modules:
The Negotiated Study modules allow you to gain an in depth understanding of a particular subject area in which you have a specific interest.
It is advisable to consider your choice of optional modules carefully to reflect your personal strengths and potential career aspirations.
The compulsory modules must be studied first. The other modules can be studied in any order. Research Project in Health and Social Care is normally the last module you study.
On your application form you will need to indicate which module/s you intend to study in your first year (maximum 60 credits). Then each academic year you will need to select subsequent modules that you plan to study by visiting this portal.

This programme is modular and the fees are payable per module. Some modules are subject to non-standard fees (e.g. ultrasound clinical modules).
For NHS employees, the University works with NHS trusts, Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) and Community Education Provider Networks (CEPNs) across the East of England under the Sustainability and Transformation Plans and their Local Workforce Advisory Boards’ transformational frameworks. It is therefore worth checking with the CPD lead for your Trust as part or all of your fees may be covered.

Funding
This programme is modular and the fees are payable per module. Some modules are subject to non-standard fees (e.g. ultrasound clinical modules).
Fees will differ for students assessed as Overseas fee payers. Fee assessment decisions follow UKCISA (UK Council for International Student Affairs) guidance, which is based on UK law and government regulations. Prerequisites
You will need to be registered with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) (or equivalent professional registration).
The normal entry requirements for the programme are:
- An honours degree in Radiography and normally be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council or have acceptable qualifications in a related health profession.
- Candidates will normally have some relevant clinical practice experience subsequent to qualification.
- Where appropriate, candidates require employment in, or access to an appropriate clinical site whilst enrolled on the programme. Students are responsible for securing an appropriate clinical placement.
