Course overview

This module explores advanced communication techniques for healthcare professionals working towards enhanced or advanced practice. Students will analyse complex patient presentations and tailor communication to individual patient needs whilst fostering empathy in sensitive situations. 


Students will develop their abilities in evaluating complex patient presentations. This will involve applying clinical reasoning frameworks to appreciate medical histories and treatment options. Student will learn to adapt their communication to an individual needs by assessing a patient's communication preferences, anxieties, and cultural background to deliver information clearly, respectful, and with empathy. The module will explore techniques for navigating difficult conversations such as delivering unexpected news considering the emotional intelligence to the patient. Students will develop their skills in explaining procedures in a way that is understandable to those without a medical background. 


Learning Outcomes

  1. Develop the skills to communicate complex information to patients in a sensitive and empathic way.

  2. Develop different communication techniques to address patient anxieties and ensure a patient-centred approach to obtaining informed consent. 

  3. Independently assess a patients communication need and adapt their approach accordingly. 

  4. Advocate for strategies to improve communication across the wider healthcare setting.
